Morning found Callum Hayes already where he had been ordered to stay.

Stomach down. Thin mattress. Cage size three locked cold against the sheet. Six rectangles of heat under the grey F-category hem talking to each other like they had not finished arguing with Gallery B wood. He had slept in pieces - wake, pulse, phrase under the pillow for cameras that never blinked, sleep again - and the demerit was still one (mouth) because he had not invented a verbal in the dark. Inventing verbals in the dark was still stupidity. Stupidity climbed.

Collar amber. Confirm.

He answered without rolling onto his back. Back would have been unauthorized comfort. Unauthorized comfort was arrogance. Arrogance climbed.

"Hayes. Day Eight. Sleep posture held. Demerit one, mouth."

Green. Logged. The duty officer's boots stopped at the end of his mat long enough for a glance that was inventory, not mercy. She did not ask how the six felt. Feelings were not data she collected at chimes.

"Up to kneel for chimes. Stomach overnight is not an excuse for late. Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Almost rough on the first syllable from pillow-dry throat, then steady. She tapped the collar once more and moved on. Other F-cats were already rising with the soft sounds of boys who had not taken length yesterday and still got to pretend mornings were ordinary. Callum pushed to Position Three recover-kneel first - hands behind his head, hem down, cage on display - and felt the six light up when his thighs closed. Standing would come when ordered. Crawling would come when ordered. The walk would be noticed either way.

He knew that before breakfast. Knowing did not make the first vertical step kinder.

Breakfast was standing. Protein cup cold against his palms. Standing made the six argue louder - not sharp like fresh wood, deeper, like a bruise learning how to walk. He held the cup. He did not invent a grimace for sympathy. Sympathy was not on the menu at Detention Centre 7. When the line shifted toward the corridor, his first steps were careful without looking careful - the filthy middle ground the Centre trained into boys who had taken formal length and still had to move like inventory that mattered.

An F-cat two mats over watched his gait and then studied the floor hard enough to invent a crease. No words. The silence was the notice. Callum felt heat climb his neck for being readable and kept the phrase under his tongue like a second lock.

I obey female authority.

He meant to keep it clean for Solenne.

The Block C board had changed overnight the way boards always changed - without asking who was ready.

HAYES, C. - DAY EIGHT
POST-SET: STOMACH SLEEP HELD
LAUNDRY: RESTRICTED HEIGHT (NO HIGH TABLE)
INSPECTION: SOLENNE - ANNEX SLOT 10:20
DEMERIT: 1 - MOUTH
NOTE: WALK UNDER OBSERVATION. DO NOT DISCUSS LENGTH.

Other boys glanced once. Looked away. Discussing completed sets was still named worse than discussing length. Callum kept his eyes on his own cup and let cold plastic tell him the truth: Day Seven was finished wood. Day Eight was consequences wearing a schedule. Patel's count still lived somewhere behind his teeth. Voss's hip tape was gone and somehow still there. Solenne's weather-mild empty hands were already a clock of their own at ten-twenty.

He finished the protein. He did not rush. Rushing looked like fear inventing a verbal with feet.

Laundry under Supervisor M. Kade opened at 07:55 with the south bay already steaming and the high table conspicuously not his problem.

"Hayes." Kade did not look soft. She never looked soft on mornings after Gallery B. "Board still true?"

"Yes, Ma'am. Restricted height. Annex ten-twenty. Demerit one, mouth."

"Good. You can still ruin a held demerit with corridor arrogance before Solenne sees you." She pointed at the scrub pads without offering height as a rumor. "Knees. Bucket. No partial standing height today - that was day-of kindness and kindness evaporated on schedule. You scrub until nine. You fold after. You do not invent a limp for attention. Limps for attention are verbals with posture. Okonkwo still has swelling-note room if you invent late to the annex. Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Acceptable. Crawl when released. Unauthorized standing between laundry and annex is still arrogance. You know the ladder."

"Yes, Ma'am."

He scrubbed. Steam plastered the shirt to his back. Every forward rock made the cage kiss tile - soft tick - and the six under his hem answered with a deeper heat that was not steam. He did not flinch for the tick. Missing the flinch still burned his ears the way it had on Day Seven before the wood made flinching irrelevant. At 08:30 a younger F-cat in the next bay glanced at Callum's careful knees and opened his mouth - then shut it when Kade's shadow crossed the wet floor. Discussion died unborn. Callum kept his eyes on soap lines and let gratitude for silence feel as humiliating as notice.

At 09:00 the collar chimed and he answered without inventing pride about the clean tone. At 09:40 Kade walked the fold bay, checked a stack diagram, and did not gift him height. Vertical stayed other boys' problem. His problem was creases, the clock marching toward Solenne's slot, and the knowledge that restricted height was not punishment layered on top of six - it was simply Day Eight telling the truth about what completed sets cost in public.

"Released to crawl at ten hundred," she said when his line cleared. "Early is still the difference between held and climbed. Do not confuse heat for standing permission. Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

He crawled. Corridor polish smell. Cage metronome. The six made every knee-fall a small count he was not allowed to speak aloud. Block C fell behind. The unmarked annex door arrived the way unmarked doors always arrived - too soon and not soon enough. His thighs went hot under grey cloth. Observation glass hummed somewhere ahead like a held breath.

10:14.

Callum settled on the annex mat early - hands behind his head, chin soft, hem down, cage displayed for inventory - and waited. The voice-log panel glowed amber. No paddle on a stand. Somehow the absence still sharpened the room. Somewhere behind the glass a tablet might have been open on his Day Seven clip - six received, thank spoken, demerit held. He did not invent looking for lenses. Looking for lenses was curiosity. Curiosity climbed.

The door opened at 10:19.

Solenne walked in weather-mild, palms empty, as if empty hands were still the sharper threat. She did not greet him. Data first. Always data first.

"Up to kneel taller. Chin tip. Eyes on me."

He rose within the kneel the way annex taught - height without standing permission, throat offered without inventing a speech. She watched his mouth first. Always the mouth. Demerit one lived there like a jewel he was too scared to drop.

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Clean. She let the green collar tap answer before she crouched to his side and set two gloved fingers against the heat under his hem - clinical, humiliating in its lack of romance, inventory the way Voss had been inventory after six. No soft-talk. Aftercare here was posture until dismissed and the privilege of not earning Okonkwo's note.

"Swelling within expected Day-Eight map. You slept stomach. Good. You walked noticeable. Also expected." Her voice stayed mild. Mild was not soft. "Do not discuss length with other F-cats. Discussion is a verbal wearing social clothes. Confirm."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Okonkwo does not need a note from this check. She will need one if you invent standing between here and Block C, or if you invent a grimace at laundry for pity. Pity is not a category. Boys who beg with their faces climb faster than boys who beg with their mouths." A pause - not kindness. Attention. "Phrase again. Slower. I want to hear whether Day Seven wood softened your consonants."

"I obey female authority."

Slower. Steady. Consonants held. She watched the syllables settle the way she had under one-way glass on annex night and made a mark on the tablet without letting him see whether it was praise or merely data. Praise was not promised. Data was. Humiliation rose hot behind his ears anyway - not only from the gloved touch. From wanting the mark to mean he was still countable.

"Recover kneel. Hands. Eyes down until dismissed."

He knelt. The cage pressed his heel. The six pulsed in time with his pulse. Solenne stood, weather still mild, and the annex air felt sharper for her not raising her voice.

"Released to crawl. Hold your one. Day Eight is not a holiday because Day Seven finished. Holidays are for boys who invent them. You invent nothing."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Go."

Block C took him back slower than morning and louder than he wanted to be.

The notice walk was not a performance. It was physics - heat under cloth, cage locked, thighs arguing with corridor length - and other F-cats made room without making eye contact. One boy at the water station swallowed a question and turned it into a drink. Callum did not thank him. Thanks for silence could become a verbal about the set. He crawled to his mat, settled into recover-kneel until the board found him afternoon work, and let the Centre's ordinary cruelty resume:

SERVICE: LINEN SORT - SOUTH STACK - KNEELING ONLY
SUPERVISOR: KADE ROTATION
NOTE: NO HEIGHT. NO DISCUSSION.

He sorted. Corners. Counts. Stack diagrams that did not care about Gallery B. The work was ordinary until his body reminded him ordinary was a privilege earned by not climbing. When his hem pulled wrong across the six he breathed through it without inventing a sound. When Kade passed once and said only, "Creases. Eyes down. Phrase when the collar asks," he obeyed both the spoken and the unspoken. The collar asked twice before evening. He answered twice. Green twice. Demerit held like a thin wire he could feel in his teeth.

At one point an F-cat across the south stack whispered, barely, "Was it-" and stopped when Callum's eyes stayed on linen. The whisper died. Callum's neck burned for the almost-question and for the filthy gratitude that silence still counted as survival. He folded the next sheet with hands that wanted to shake and were not allowed to.

Mid-afternoon the collar chimed irregular - annex echo, Solenne's calendar still living in the hardware - and he answered on his knees between stacks without inventing annoyance.

"Hayes. Confirm demerit."

"One. Mouth. Ma'am."

"Confirm posture schedule tonight."

"Stomach sleep. As ordered."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Green. The irregular check ended. Nobody around him asked what the collar had wanted. Asking was discussion wearing concern. He returned to corners and counts and the slow heat that made every reach for a high shelf a temptation he was not allowed to take.

Evening chimes arrived like they always did - indifferent to how loud six still felt.

Callum knelt for them. Protein cup empty. Board still true. Solenne's clinical map still warm under the hem where romance had never been invited. Voss's count still lived in his throat like a second phrase he was not allowed to say unless ordered. The duty officer's boots stopped at his mat. Tablet light on his face. Inventory hour.

"Hayes. Day Eight close. Sleep posture."

"Stomach, Ma'am. As ordered."

"Demerit."

"One. Mouth."

"Walk."

He almost invented a verbal - an explanation, a soft apology for being readable - and swallowed it. "Noticeable, Ma'am. Held without discussion."

A pause. Then a mark. Not praise. Data.

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Green. Lights-out order without commentary. He went down onto the mattress the way he had been taught to receive wood - careful, complete, no reaching for comfort that had not been issued. The cage kissed cold sheet. The six talked in slow pulses. Somewhere in Block C another boy pretended not to notice the sound of Hayes settling like a completed set still learning how to be horizontal on command.

Callum rehearsed once into the pillow, soft, for the cameras and for the demerit he was still holding and for the filthy fact that being inspected without climbing felt like a different kind of thank-you - quieter than Gallery B's six, somehow hotter.

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Steady.

Held.

Day Eight was not a countdown.

It was stomach orders, a noticeable walk, restricted height that did not bother pretending to be kindness, and the knowledge - lodged hotter than swelling - that he wanted to stay countable.
