Morning chimes did not care that Day Seven had arrived with a number attached.

Callum Hayes answered them kneeling on the Block C mat - cage size three locked under the grey F-category hem, demerit still one (mouth), Solenne's lighter palm marks a ghost that would not survive what Gallery B was about to install - and said the phrase clean before the duty officer finished her tablet swipe.

"I obey female authority."

Green. Logged. No one asked how his stomach felt about 14:00. He did not offer it. Offering feelings was a verbal. Verbals climbed demerits. He was holding one. He meant to keep holding it through breakfast standing, through laundry without the high-table gift, through the corridor mat at thirteen-forty, through six on wood that had stopped being a rumor in his ribs and become a clock time he could taste.

Breakfast was standing. Protein cup cold against his palms. The board on the wall showed his line again as if he might have forgotten overnight:

HAYES, C. - DAY SEVEN GALLERY B - 14:00 LENGTH: SIX (DEMERIT: 1 - MOUTH) REPORT CORRIDOR MAT 13:40

Other F-cats glanced once and looked away. Discussing length was still named stupidity. Stupidity climbed demerits faster than steam burns. Callum kept his eyes on his own cup and let Gallery B wood replay behind them - Patel counting, six rectangles, Solenne's weather-mild math - until the cage ticked once when he shifted and heat climbed his neck for the missing flinch.

I obey female authority.

Clean under his breath. Steady. He meant to keep it that way when the sound stopped being someone else's.

Laundry under Supervisor M. Kade opened at 07:58 shorter than usual - scrub bay, fold bay, no partial standing height today. Yesterday's high-table gift had been day-of kindness. Kindness evaporated on schedule.

"Hayes. Board still true?"

"Yes, Ma'am. Fourteen hundred. Gallery B. Six. Corridor mat thirteen-forty."

"Good. You can still ruin six before you earn it." She pointed at the south bay without looking soft. "Pads. Bucket. Scrub until nine. Fold after. Eyes on creases, not on clocks. Okonkwo still has swelling-note room if you invent late. Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Acceptable. Crawl when released to the gallery corridor. Unauthorized standing between laundry and Gallery B is arrogance. Arrogance climbs. You know the ladder."

"Yes, Ma'am."

He scrubbed. Steam plastered the shirt to his back. Every forward rock made the cage kiss cold tile - soft tick, no flinch, worse burn in the ears for the missing flinch. At 09:00 the collar chimed and he answered without inventing pride about the clean tone. At 10:00 again. At 11:00 Kade walked the fold bay once, checked a stack diagram, and did not gift him height. Vertical had been earned yesterday. Today he stayed on his knees until dismissal and felt the absence of standing like a second demerit he was not allowed to name.

"Released to crawl at thirteen hundred," Kade said when the line cleared. "Early is not optional. Early is the difference between six and Okonkwo's note. Do not confuse adrenaline for permission."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

He crawled. The cage metronomed on corridor tile. Block C fell behind. Gallery B's polish-and-disinfectant smell arrived before the door did - old sweat under institutional clean, wood oil, the faint electrical hum of observation glass warming up. His thighs went hot under the grey cloth. Observation day lived in his bones. Today he was not in the back row with eyes forced open. Today he was the set.

13:38.

The corridor mat waited where observation boys had knelt before. Callum arrived early on hands and knees, settled with hands behind his head, hem down, cage on display for inventory, chin soft, and waited for the collar to demand confirmation.

Amber pulse. Confirm.

"Hayes. Day Seven. Fourteen hundred. Gallery B. Six. Demerit one, mouth. Reporting early as ordered."

Green. A camera lens adjusted with a soft whir. Somewhere inside the gallery a wood edge kissed a stand - not a strike yet, only placement - and Callum's stomach dropped into something filthy and grateful and terrified all at once.

Drill Officer Voss arrived at 13:52 with a clipboard and the same hip tape coil from briefing night. Solenne walked half a step behind her, weather-mild, palms empty, as if empty hands were the sharper threat. Callum kept Position-ready stillness on the mat until ordered up. Reaching for explanations was a verbal. He had none that were allowed.

"Up to Position One when I say," Voss said. No greeting. Data first. "Presentation stand. Chin soft. Eyes on me until I redirect. Do not reach back at any point. Reaching back is interference. Interference ends kindness. Confirm."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Stand."

He stood. Position One - the presentation stand she had drilled into his hips the night before - felt different with Gallery B's observation glass dark behind him and the paddle stand visible in the corner of his eye. Cage hanging like a locked apology. Palm marks murmuring. Breath short and obedient. Solenne circled once. She tipped his chin with two fingers the way she had in the Annex, checked the phrase without asking for it yet, and nodded once to Voss as if passing weather.

"He is holding," Solenne said. "Six remains six unless he invents."

"Understood." Voss stepped in. Hip tape. Cold strip against skin that already knew the angle from Briefing Room 3. A half-degree correction that made his stomach drop because it meant she could still see what the wood would reveal. "Position Two on my count. Brace for wood. Do not invent a flinch into a verbal. Count aloud. Thank after six. Aftercare is Position Three recover kneel until dismissed - posture, phrase, swelling check if ordered. Questions that are not negotiation - none."

Callum's mouth was dry. "Yes, Ma'am."

The gallery clock ticked toward 14:00 like it had been waiting for him personally. He could still hear Patel's count from observation day - not as memory, as rehearsal his throat had stolen. Six. Not twelve. Solenne's kindness of holding the mouth demerit at one sat in his chest like heat he was not supposed to enjoy.

He enjoyed it anyway. Filthy. Grateful. Held.

14:00.

"Position Two."

He braced. Hip tape held the angle. Hands stayed forward on the designated rail - not behind, never reaching. The first crack of wood arrived as calibration and lightning at once. Heat bloomed across the lighter palm ghosts and buried them. Solenne's marks had been kindness. This was the gift she had paid for by keeping his demerit at one.

"One, Ma'am."

Breath stuttered. He did not invent a verbal. The cage ticked once against nothing - air, shame, locked want - and he kept his eyes where Voss had put them: forward, soft, receiving.

"Two, Ma'am."

Observation glass might have held someone. He had been that someone. The sound in his bones finally matched the sound on his skin. Humiliation rose hot behind his ears - not only pain. Want. The filthy knowledge of being counted like inventory that mattered.

"Three, Ma'am."

Voss paused. Not kindness. Posture. A fingertip at his hip. "Angle. Do not make me spend the pause. Pauses for correction risk the six climbing if you waste them. Kindness evaporates when boys invent waste."

"Yes, Ma'am." He corrected. The pause hurt worse than the crack because it was attention with a threat attached. Solenne did not speak. Weather watching weather.

"Four, Ma'am."

Throat tight. Phrase ready under the tongue like a second demerit waiting to be born if he cracked it. He did not crack it. He held the mouth demerit like a jewel he was too scared to drop. Wood landed again - fifth - and his vision went briefly white at the edges without letting his hands invent a reach.

"Five, Ma'am."

One more. The countdown that had lived in him since Gallery B observation compressed into a single breath. He took it. He received it. He did not thank early.

"Six, Ma'am. Thank you, Ma'am."

Wood stopped. Gallery air rushed in around the heat. His thighs shook. Reaching back tried to invent itself in his wrists; he locked his hands on the rail until Voss said release. Six rectangles of fire talked under the hem where Solenne's palms had been lighter, kinder, incomplete.

"Position Three. Recover kneel. Now."

He knelt. Hands behind his head. Eyes down until ordered. Swelling already composing tomorrow's sleep-on-stomach problem in real time. The cage pressed cold against his heel when he settled - ridiculous, locked, the only arousal Detention Centre 7 allowed him to keep - and he did not invent a verbal about that either.

Solenne crouched in his peripheral vision, mild as weather. "Look at me."

He looked. Chin tip. Annex echo. Day Seven wood still ringing.

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Almost broken on the last syllable and then not. She watched his mouth the way she had under one-way glass and let the green collar tap answer for her.

Voss made a mark on the clipboard. "Demerit remains one. Mouth. You did not invent interference. You did not invent late. Swelling check - brief." A gloved touch, clinical, humiliating in its lack of romance - inventory, not aftercare soft-talk. Aftercare here was posture until dismissed. "Acceptable for return to Block C crawl. Okonkwo does not need a note today. Do not earn one on the corridor by mistaking heat for standing permission. Lights-out posture as normal. Sleep on your stomach. Confirm."

Heat climbed his neck - gratitude again, worse than the wood, worse than the pause. "Yes, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Released to crawl. Unauthorized standing is still arrogance. Hold your one."

"Yes, Ma'am."

He crawled. Every motion lit the six. Gallery B's door sighed shut behind him. In the corridor the polish smell returned and the observation-day memory finally had a twin: not watching, receiving. 14:00 was no longer a clock ahead of him. It was heat under his hem and a count that still lived in his throat like a second phrase.

Block C found him slower on the mat than morning. Other F-cats noticed the walk - not with words, with the careful silence of boys who knew discussing length was stupidity and discussing completed sets was worse. Callum did not explain. Explanations were verbals. He knelt for evening chimes, answered clean, and let the duty officer tap his collar at lights-out - green - and order stomach-down without commentary.

He obeyed. The cage pressed cold into the thin mattress. Six rectangles of heat pulsed in time with his pulse. Solenne's palm ghosts were gone under the deeper map. Voss's hip tape was gone and somehow still there. Patel's count had become his own throat's property.

He rehearsed once into the pillow, soft, for the cameras that never blinked and for the demerit he had managed not to climb and for the filthy fact that he had thanked for six like it was a gift.

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Steady.

Held.

Day Seven was no longer a countdown.

It was a completed set - and the knowledge, lodged hotter than swelling, that he wanted to stay the kind of boy who could still be counted.
