Morning found Callum Hayes on his stomach again - ordered, not chosen - with cage size three locked cold against the sheet and six rectangles of heat under the grey F-category hem still arguing like unfinished inventory that refused to go quiet just because a bargain had already been spent.
Day Ten. Demerit still one (mouth). Walk still noticeable. Height still gone.
Collar amber. Confirm.
He answered without rolling onto his back. Back was still unauthorized comfort. Unauthorized comfort was still arrogance. Arrogance still climbed.
"Hayes. Day Ten. Sleep posture held overnight. Demerit one, mouth."
Green. Logged. The duty officer's boots paused at the end of his mat the way they always paused when a walk was still being inventoried - clinical, not kind. She did not ask how the six felt about a third morning of being readable. Feelings were not data she collected at chimes.
"Up to kneel. Phrase."
"I obey female authority."
Clean. Steady. Consonants held the way Solenne had demanded slower yesterday. The duty officer tapped the collar once and moved on. Other F-cats rose with the soft sounds of boys who had never bought thirty minutes of standing fold and still got to pretend mornings were ordinary. Callum pushed to Position Three recover-kneel first - hands behind his head, hem down, cage on display - and felt the six light up when his thighs closed. Standing would come when ordered. Height would not. Bargains did not renew themselves out of pity.
He knew that before breakfast. Knowing did not make the empty high table quieter in his head.
Breakfast was standing. Protein cup cold against his palms. Standing made the six argue deeper than Day Nine - settled, loud, readable. An F-cat at the next line watched Callum's gait and then studied his own cup hard enough to invent a crease. No words. Callum kept the phrase under his tongue like a second lock and meant to keep it clean. Day Ten felt like a day that would try to make it soft.
The Block C board had changed overnight the way boards always changed - without asking who was ready.
HAYES, C. - DAY TEN
POST-SET: STOMACH SLEEP HELD (3 NIGHTS)
LAUNDRY: RESTRICTED HEIGHT (NO HIGH TABLE) - BARGAIN SPENT
NOTE: NO HEIGHT OFFERS. REFUSE CLEANLY IF TESTED.
INSPECTION: SOLENNE - ANNEX SLOT 14:00 (MOUTH EDGE CHECK)
DEMERIT: 1 - MOUTH
WALK: UNDER OBSERVATION. DO NOT DISCUSS LENGTH OR BARGAIN.
Other boys glanced once. Looked away. Callum kept his eyes on his own cup: Day Nine was height with a price; Day Ten was a mouth that still had one demerit left to lose and an annex slot that smelled like Solenne already. He finished the protein without rushing. Rushing looked like fear inventing a verbal with feet.
Laundry under Supervisor M. Kade opened at 07:50 with the south bay already steaming and the high table conspicuously not his problem - and she made sure he knew it with a sentence that was not a bargain.
"Hayes." Kade did not look soft. She never looked soft on mornings after a boy had already spent his height. "Board still true?"
"Yes, Ma'am. Restricted height. Bargain spent. Annex fourteen hundred. Demerit one, mouth."
"Good. You can still ruin a held demerit with corridor arrogance before Solenne sees you." She pointed at the scrub pads, then - deliberately - at the high table where other F-cats were already sorting at standing height. "No offer today. If I ask whether you want height, the correct answer is no. If a boy asks what yesterday bought you, the correct answer is silence. If your mouth goes soft because your knees hurt, that is still a climb. Confirm you heard the price of staying at one."
"Yes, Ma'am. No height. No discussion. Phrase stays clean."
"Phrase."
"I obey female authority."
"Acceptable. Crawl when released to scrub. Unauthorized standing is still arrogance. You know the ladder."
"Yes, Ma'am."
He scrubbed. Steam plastered the shirt to his back. Every forward rock made the cage kiss tile - soft tick - and the six answered with heat that was not steam. At 08:20 a younger F-cat opened his mouth - then shut it when Kade's shadow crossed the wet floor. Callum kept his eyes on soap lines and let gratitude for silence feel as humiliating as notice.
At 08:45 Kade walked the fold bay like a verdict with boots and stopped where Callum could see the high table without being allowed to want it.
"Hayes. Question. Do you want thirty minutes of standing fold."
It was not kindness. It was a test wearing a question mark. Callum's thighs burned. The six argued. For a filthy second he almost invented yes - soft, grateful, climbing. He swallowed it.
"No, Ma'am. Bargain spent. Kneeling only."
"Phrase."
"I obey female authority."
Clean. Steady. She watched his mouth the way Solenne watched mouths - for soft edges, for invented apology, for the filthy wish to be praised for refusing. Then she pointed back at the scrub pads.
"Correct. Do not invent pride about that either. Pride climbs as stupid as pity. Crawl when released to linen sort. Early is still the difference between held and climbed."
"Yes, Ma'am."
He crawled. Corridor polish smell. Cage metronome. The six made every knee-fall a small count he was not allowed to speak aloud. Block C fell behind and then returned as afternoon work found him:
SERVICE: LINEN SORT - SOUTH STACK - KNEELING ONLY
SUPERVISOR: KADE ROTATION
NOTE: NO HEIGHT. NO DISCUSSION. MOUTH EDGE CHECK AT 14:00.
He sorted. Corners. Counts. When his hem pulled wrong across the six he breathed through it without inventing a sound. The collar asked twice before noon. He answered twice. Green twice. Demerit held like a thin wire in his teeth.
An F-cat across the south stack whispered, barely, "Did she give you-" and stopped when Callum's eyes stayed on linen. Callum's neck burned for the almost-question and for the filthy gratitude that silence still counted as survival.
At 13:40 Kade released him to annex prep with a look that said early was still cheaper than soft.
13:52.
Callum settled on the annex mat early - hands behind his head, chin soft, hem down, cage displayed for inventory - and waited. The voice-log panel glowed amber. No paddle on a stand. He did not invent looking for lenses. Looking for lenses was curiosity, and curiosity climbed.
The door opened at 13:59.
Solenne walked in weather-mild, palms empty, as if empty hands were still the sharper threat. She did not greet him. Data first. Always data first.
"Up to kneel taller. Chin tip. Eyes on me."
He rose within the kneel the way annex taught - height without standing permission, throat offered without inventing a speech. She watched his mouth first. Always the mouth. Demerit one lived there like a jewel he was too scared to drop.
"Day Ten. Kade logged a refused height test. Confirmed clean. Good." Mild was not soft. "Now we see whether refusing made you hungry enough to smear consonants. Phrase. Slow. Then again. Then once more with the collar amber until I say stop. If you invent thank-you, apology, or a wish for height, I will climb you. Confirm."
"Yes, Ma'am."
"Phrase."
"I obey female authority."
Slow. Clean. She listened like a woman checking a lock she already owned.
"Again. Softer volume. Same consonants. Do not invent romance in the edges."
"I obey female authority."
Still clean. His thighs burned. The six talked under the hem. Solenne's mild weather did not move.
"Again. Collar amber. Hold the last word until I cut you."
Amber pulsed against his throat. He started the phrase and felt the filthy wish to be praised for yesterday's bargain rise like steam - and crushed it. "I obey female authority."
Green on the panel. Solenne marked something. Not praise. Data.
"Acceptable. Swelling check." Clinical hands. Brief. Map still within Day-Nine lines - loud enough to read, not loud enough for Okonkwo. "Walk when released. Noticeable expected. Discussion forbidden. Demerit remains one if your mouth stays hard through evening confirms."
"Yes, Ma'am."
"Phrase once more. Normal speed."
He said it. Almost clean. Almost. The last consonant softened a fraction - hunger, fatigue, the ghost of high-table height - and Solenne's mild weather cooled without raising her voice.
"Again. That was soft."
Heat climbed his neck. Soft was a climb wearing a syllable. "I obey female authority."
Harder. Better. She watched him the way Kade had watched him refuse height - for the filthy wish to be forgiven for the near miss.
"Logged as edge. Not climbed. Yet." Mild again. "If the collar catches soft tonight, you will not get a warning dressed as weather. Crawl when released to Block C. Early. Phrase."
"I obey female authority."
"Go."
He crawled. Corridor polish smell. Cage metronome. The near-miss lived behind his teeth like a second demerit waiting for a softer hour.
Block C took him back slower than morning and louder than he wanted to be. The notice walk was physics - heat under cloth, cage locked, thighs arguing with corridor length. He crawled to his mat and let the board find him late service:
SERVICE: LINEN SORT - SOUTH STACK - KNEELING ONLY
SUPERVISOR: KADE ROTATION
NOTE: NO HEIGHT. EDGE LOGGED. NO DISCUSSION.
He sorted. The collar asked at 16:10. He answered. Green. Demerit held like a thin wire with a soft notch already cut into it.
At 17:40 an F-cat across the south stack whispered, barely, "Was Solenne-" and Callum's mouth opened before his training caught up - a half-breath, a soft start of a word that was not silence - and he crushed it into linen so hard his knuckles whitened. Too late. Soft had already left his throat like a leak.
The collar chimed irregular as if it had been waiting for that exact failure.
"Hayes. Phrase."
Amber. He answered hard. "I obey female authority."
A pause long enough to invent hope and then lose it.
"Soft edge confirmed under observation. Demerit climbs. Mouth. Two." Not Solenne's weather. Hardware weather. Data. "Confirm."
His ears burned. Climbing felt exactly like being countable in the wrong direction. "Confirmed, Ma'am. Demerit two. Mouth."
"Continue service. No discussion. Stomach sleep remains. Phrase when asked."
"Yes, Ma'am."
Green on the confirm. Not mercy. Inventory. The F-cat across the stack had gone pale and silent. Callum folded the next sheet with hands that wanted to shake and were not allowed to. Demerit two sat behind his teeth like a new jewel he had forged himself out of a soft half-word.
Kade found him ten minutes later without needing the board to explain. She looked at his mouth first. Always the mouth when the number changed.
"Board will update. You know why."
"Yes, Ma'am. Soft under observation."
"Phrase."
"I obey female authority."
Hard. Late. She nodded once - not praise - and pointed at the stacks. "Kneeling only. No height. No pity face. Climbing does not buy you comfort. It buys you counting."
"Yes, Ma'am."
He counted corners until evening chimes arrived like they always did - indifferent to how loud six still felt, indifferent to bargains already spent, indifferent to a mouth that had finally climbed.
Evening found Callum kneeling for them. Protein cup empty. Board already true in the way boards were true after hardware did the climbing for you.
HAYES, C. - DAY TEN CLOSE
DEMERIT: 2 - MOUTH
SLEEP: STOMACH
WALK: NOTICEABLE - HELD WITHOUT DISCUSSION
NOTE: NO HEIGHT. EDGE BECAME CLIMB.
The duty officer's boots stopped at his mat. Tablet light on his face. Inventory hour.
"Hayes. Day Ten close. Sleep posture."
"Stomach, Ma'am. As ordered."
"Demerit."
"Two. Mouth."
"Walk."
He almost invented a verbal - an explanation, a soft apology for the half-word, a thank-you for the warning Solenne had dressed as weather - and swallowed it. "Noticeable, Ma'am. Held without discussion."
A pause. Then a mark. Not praise. Data.
"Phrase."
"I obey female authority."
Hard. Green. Lights-out order without commentary. He went down onto the mattress the way he had been taught to receive wood - careful, complete, no reaching for comfort that had not been issued. The cage kissed cold sheet. The six talked in slow pulses. Somewhere in Block C another boy pretended not to notice the sound of Hayes settling like a completed set that had finally paid for a soft mouth with a second demerit.
Callum rehearsed once into the pillow - soft enough to feel the danger, hard enough not to climb again - for the cameras and for demerit two and for the filthy fact that staying countable through a refused bargain and a climbed mouth felt like a different kind of thank-you - quieter than Gallery B's six, somehow hotter.
"I obey female authority."
Clean. Steady.
Held - at two.
Day Ten was not a countdown.
It was a refused height test, an annex edge that became a climb, a noticeable walk that still refused discussion, demerit two sitting behind his teeth like heat, and the knowledge - lodged hotter than swelling - that he still wanted to stay countable.
