Morning found Callum Hayes on his stomach again - ordered, not chosen - with cage size three locked cold against the sheet and six rectangles of heat under the grey F-category hem still arguing like a file that had learned how to write his name and refused to stop reading it back.

Day Thirteen. Demerit two (mouth). Walk measured. Filed. Noticeable. Okonkwo's note no longer deferred - active review sitting behind his ribs like a hand that had closed and was waiting to see if he would invent softness under the pressure of being already written.

Collar amber. Confirm.

He answered without rolling onto his back. Back was still unauthorized comfort. Unauthorized comfort was still arrogance. Arrogance at two under active review did not climb into a maybe - it climbed into formal set with her name already in the margin.

"Hayes. Day Thirteen. Sleep posture held overnight. Demerit two, mouth. Okonkwo review active."

Green. Logged. The duty officer's boots paused the way they paused when a boy's file had stopped being empty - not kindness, inventory with teeth. She did not ask how the six felt about a sixth morning of being readable under a closed note. Feelings were not data she collected at chimes.

"Up to kneel. Phrase. Hard. She reads what soft invents."

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Steady. Consonants held like they were being billed to a tablet he could not see. The duty officer tapped the collar once and moved on. Callum pushed to Position Three recover-kneel first - hands behind his head, hem down, cage on display - and felt the six light up when his thighs closed. Standing would come when ordered. Height would not. Soft would not. Active review did not forgive a boy for wanting the note to mean finished.

Breakfast was standing. Protein cup cold against his palms. Standing made the six argue deeper than Day Twelve - settled, loud, readable - and the measured walk that carried him to the line still felt like a sentence other boys could invent without being told. Callum kept the phrase under his tongue like a second lock and meant to keep it hard. Day Thirteen felt like a day that would test whether a filed note made soft cheaper or more expensive.

The Block C board had changed overnight the way boards always changed - without asking who was ready.

HAYES, C. - DAY THIRTEEN
POST-SET: STOMACH SLEEP HELD (6 NIGHTS)
LAUNDRY: RESTRICTED HEIGHT (NO HIGH TABLE) - BARGAIN SPENT
NOTE: NO HEIGHT OFFERS. REFUSE CLEANLY IF TESTED.
FORMAL SET: WALK ON FILE - NOTICEABLE - NO DISCUSSION
OKONKWO: NOTE FILED - REVIEW ACTIVE - SOFT UNDER OBSERVATION CLIMBS
INSPECTION: SOLENNE - ANNEX SLOT 14:00 (MOUTH DRILL UNDER ACTIVE REVIEW)
FLAG: FORMAL-SET REVIEW IF SOFT RETURNS
DEMERIT: 2 - MOUTH
WALK: FILED. DO NOT DISCUSS LENGTH, BARGAIN, OR MEASUREMENT.

Other boys glanced once. Looked away faster than yesterday. Callum finished the protein without rushing. Rushing looked like fear inventing a verbal with feet.

Laundry under Supervisor M. Kade opened at 07:50 with the south bay already steaming and the high table conspicuously not his problem.

"Hayes." Kade did not look soft. She never looked soft on mornings after a boy had been written. "Board still true?"

"Yes, Ma'am. Restricted height. Bargain spent. Okonkwo review active. Annex fourteen hundred. Demerit two, mouth. Walk filed. Formal-set flag if soft returns."

"Good. Yesterday you held hard under a closed note. Today the note is hungry for a reason to climb you. If you invent softness because someone is already writing, you invent formal consequences with her name in the margin. Confirm you heard the weather."

"Yes, Ma'am. No height. No discussion. Phrase stays hard."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Acceptable. Crawl when released to scrub. Unauthorized standing is still arrogance. You know the ladder - and the ladder does not get kinder when Okonkwo's tablet is already open."

"Yes, Ma'am."

He scrubbed. Steam plastered the shirt to his back. Every forward rock made the cage kiss tile - soft tick - and the six answered with heat that was not steam. At 08:45 Kade walked the fold bay and stopped where Callum could see the high table without being allowed to want it.

"Hayes. Question. Do you want thirty minutes of standing fold."

It was not kindness. It was the same test wearing a question mark on a morning when formal-set review was already flagged. Callum's thighs burned. Demerit two sat behind his teeth like a warning he could taste. He did not invent yes.

"No, Ma'am. Bargain spent. Kneeling only."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Hard. She watched his mouth for soft edges, for invented apology, for the filthy wish to be praised for refusing on a day that already had Okonkwo reading. Then she pointed back at the scrub pads.

"Correct. Do not invent pride about that either. Crawl when released to linen sort. Climbed under active review is not a story you want next to your walk and her note."

"Yes, Ma'am."

He crawled. Knees burned. Cage dragged its quiet tick across tile. The high table stayed someone else's problem.

Annex corridor at 13:50. Mat. Hands behind his head. Chin soft. Hem down. Cage displayed for inventory.

Supervisor Solenne arrived with tablet and gloves. Behind her, boots entered fully. Not a silhouette. Okonkwo. Tall. Quiet. Tablet already open like a mouth that had decided soft under her note would not stay theoretical.

"Hayes. Day Thirteen. Board says demerit two, mouth. Okonkwo review active. Confirm."

"Yes, Ma'am. Demerit two, mouth. Review active."

"Walk on file. Noticeable. Measured. No discussion." Solenne did not glance at Okonkwo the way she had glanced at a doorway. "Today you drill hard under a closed file that is reading you live. Soft at two under active review is not an edge - it is a climb into formal set with her name already in the margin. Confirm you heard the weather."

"Yes, Ma'am. Hard. Slow. No soft."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Hard. Green. Okonkwo stepped closer until Callum could smell clean soap and authority that did not waste breath on warmth.

"Hayes." Okonkwo's voice was lower than Solenne's - not kinder. "Day Twelve: note filed. Day Thirteen: I watch the mouth that note warned. Confirm you heard the difference."

"Yes, Ma'am. Note active. Soft under observation climbs."

"Walk." She did not ask him to walk the tape again. She asked him to hold still while the file walked through him. "Gait readable. Swelling within Day-Nine map. Cage size three. Demerit two, mouth - held after hard drill yesterday. Formal-set review flagged if soft returns. Correct?"

"Yes, Ma'am."

"You wanted to stay countable at two." It was not a question wearing kindness. It was data with teeth. "Wanting is not a defense. Soft half-word on Day Ten climbed you. Note on Day Twelve did not finish you. Today formal set is waiting for one soft return." She tapped once on her tablet - soft click, formal as a paddle set on wood. "I stay for the drill. Solenne runs it. I read what soft invents. Confirm."

Heat climbed Callum's neck hotter than the six. Being watched while being drilled felt like being touched with gloves on - clinical, complete. Somewhere under the grey hem the cage made its soft tick when his thighs tensed.

"Yes, Ma'am. You stay. Soft climbs. I heard."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Hard. Okonkwo watched his mouth for edges, then stepped aside without praise.

"Your drill," she told Solenne. "If he invents softness because I am already here, climb him. I will schedule the formal set myself."

"Yes," Solenne said, and the word was weather.

Same mat. Same amber voice-log panel. No paddle on a stand - yet. Okonkwo's open tablet sat in the air like a second set of gloves. Solenne closed the door. Gloves. Calm that made soft mouths invent themselves.

"Hayes. Day Thirteen. Demerit two, mouth. Okonkwo active. Three phrase passes. Slow. Consonants. Soft at two under review is not an edge - it is a climb into formal set with her name already in the margin. Confirm you heard the weather."

"Yes, Ma'am. Hard. Slow. No soft."

"Phrase. Pass one."

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Steady. She watched his mouth like weather that could turn - and like a woman who knew another supervisor would schedule whatever she logged.

"Slower. Pass two."

"I obey female authority."

Harder. Consonants held. The six argued under his hem as if the mouth drill itself were a second measurement and Okonkwo's open tablet were a third. He did not invent the half-word that had climbed him on Day Ten. He held - hotter for knowing the formal-set flag was real.

"Pass three. Mean it. She is in the room. The note is. The flag is."

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Hard. Almost. On the last consonant a filthy fraction of hunger rose - the wish to be praised for holding, the soft edge of gratitude that Day Ten had already taught him was a climb - and he crushed it mid-breath. Too late for the soundless almost. Solenne's mild weather cooled without raising her voice. Okonkwo's tablet did not click. Not yet.

"Again. That was soft at the edge. Under active review. Do not invent that I did not hear it."

Heat climbed his neck hotter than the six. Soft under Okonkwo's open note was how formal set got a calendar. "I obey female authority."

Harder. Complete. Consonants billed twice. Solenne watched him for the filthy wish to be forgiven for the near miss. Okonkwo did not speak. She marked something. Not praise. Data. Not a schedule yet - a near-miss logged next to a flag that had almost earned its name.

"Logged as edge under active review. Not climbed. Yet." Mild again - colder than Day Twelve. "If the collar catches soft tonight, formal-set review will stop being a flag and start being a time. Crawl when released to linen. Kneeling only. Stomach sleep. Phrase once more for the log - and for her."

"I obey female authority."

Hard. Green. She opened the door. Corridor air. Callum crawled toward the stacks with demerit two still countable, a mouth that had almost climbed into formal set, and a file that had finally shown him how close a held two could sit to wood.

Evening found Callum kneeling for them. Protein cup empty. Board already true.

HAYES, C. - DAY THIRTEEN CLOSE
DEMERIT: 2 - MOUTH (HELD)
WALK: MEASURED - NOTICEABLE - FILED
OKONKWO: NOTE ACTIVE - EDGE LOGGED UNDER REVIEW - FORMAL SET NOT SCHEDULED
SLEEP: STOMACH
NOTE: NO HEIGHT. MOUTH DRILL HELD AFTER NEAR-MISS. FLAG REMAINS.

The duty officer's boots stopped at his mat. Tablet light on his face. Inventory hour.

"Hayes. Day Thirteen close. Sleep posture."

"Stomach, Ma'am. As ordered."

"Demerit."

"Two. Mouth. Held."

"Walk."

He almost invented a verbal - an explanation of the near-miss, a soft thank-you for Okonkwo not scheduling wood - and swallowed it. "Noticeable, Ma'am. Measured. Filed. Held without discussion."

"Okonkwo."

"Note active, Ma'am. Edge logged under review. Formal set not scheduled. Flag remains."

A pause. Then a mark. Not praise. Data.

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Hard. Green. Lights-out order without commentary. He went down onto the mattress the way he had been taught to receive wood - careful, complete, no reaching for comfort that had not been issued. The cage kissed cold sheet. The six talked in slow pulses. Somewhere in Block C another boy pretended not to notice the sound of Hayes settling like a completed set that had stayed countable at two through active review and a near-miss that still tasted like formal set waiting for a softer hour.

Callum rehearsed once into the pillow - soft enough to feel the danger, hard enough not to climb - for the cameras and for demerit two and for the filthy fact that being edged under Okonkwo's open note without being scheduled still felt like a different kind of thank-you - quieter than Gallery B's six, somehow hotter than an empty doorway. He wanted to stay countable. Wanting was not a defense. He held the consonants anyway, because held was still the only weather he was allowed to invent for himself under demerit two - and because formal set had almost learned his name today.

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Steady.

Held - at two.

Day Thirteen was not a countdown.

It was active review with Okonkwo in the room, a mouth drill that stayed hard after a near-miss soft edge, demerit two still countable, stomach sleep still ordered, a measured walk still on record, a formal-set flag that had almost become a time, and the knowledge - lodged hotter than swelling - that he still wanted to stay countable even when someone was finally reading him live.
