Breakfast in Detention Centre 7 was a long room of steel tables and the soft clatter of trays. F-category males sat. Callum Hayes stood.
He stood because Commander Rhea Solenne had said so, and because the thin grey shirt still brushed blister-hot skin every time he shifted his weight. The chastity cage - size three, locked, absurd - hung under the hem and clicked against his thigh when he reached for the protein cup. Other boys glanced once, then looked hard at their porridge. Someone at the far table whispered warm-up and went silent when a wall camera blinked.
Callum ate standing. Eyes down. Ass throbbing in a rhythm that matched his pulse. The collar's LED strip glowed soft green against his throat: zone green, posture amber, voice log idle. He rehearsed the acknowledgement phrase under his breath between swallows, the way she'd ordered.
I obey female authority.
It still caught. Not as badly as in Orientation Hall. Still enough that he felt the crack in his own throat and hated it.
07:41.
He returned the tray, followed the yellow line toward Block C, and arrived at the laundry wing doors with nineteen minutes to spare. Early. He told himself that counted for something. The cage rattled when he stopped too fast. His sit-spots reminded him that early did not erase late.
The doors hissed open on a blast of steam, detergent, and the wet slap of industrial washers. Block C laundry was a white-tiled cavern: folding tables, knee pads stacked by the wall like sports equipment for a sport nobody wanted, and a glass office raised three steps above the floor. Inside sat a woman in a charcoal utility uniform, dark braids pinned tight, tablet already open.
The nameplate on the glass read Supervisor M. Kade.
Callum knelt on the entry mat without being told. Hands behind his head. Eyes down. Shirt riding up. Cage on display under fluorescent light that made every pink inch look louder.
He waited.
At 07:59 the office door opened. Soft heels on tile. The smell of citrus cleaner and starch.
"Hayes," Supervisor Kade said. Not unkind. Not warm. "F-category. Day One. One demerit. Mouth. Private warm-up already administered by Commander Solenne. Chores on knees until thirteen-hundred, with a mid-shift posture check. Confirm."
"Yes, Ma'am."
"Louder. The machines eat soft boys."
"Yes, Ma'am."
She walked a slow circle around him. He felt her gaze on the cage, on the faint red still blooming under the shirt hem, on the way his thighs trembled from holding the deference pose after a night of almost no sleep.
"You will scrub the south bay floor on hands and knees," Kade said. "You will fold officer linens at the low table - still kneeling. You will not speak unless addressed. You will not rise without permission. If your collar logs an unauthorized verbal, I add demerit weight to Solenne's file before lunch. Nod."
He nodded.
"Verbal."
"Yes, Ma'am. I understand."
"Phrase."
Callum swallowed. "I obey female authority."
"Again. Cleaner."
"I obey female authority."
"Good enough to start. Pads on. Bucket. South bay. Eyes on tile."
The knee pads helped for the first twenty minutes. After that they were just another reminder that his body had been assigned a height.
He scrubbed. Circular strokes. Detergent burning faintly in a cut on his knuckle he didn't remember getting. Steam plastered the thin grey shirt to his back. Every time he rocked forward the cage swung and kissed cold tile with a soft tick that made his ears burn. Once, when he stretched too far, the steel caught the edge of the bucket and rang like cheap cutlery.
A laugh - short, female - came from the glass office. Not cruel. Amused. Logged, probably.
Callum kept his eyes down and scrubbed harder.
At 09:12 Kade's heels stopped beside his bucket.
"Up on your knees. Hands behind your head. Shirt hem - lift it."
His face went hot. He obeyed anyway. The cage was flushed from friction and leftover morning heat and the stupid, traitor pulse that seemed to answer female boots on tile. Size three. Pink at the tip. Ridiculous under laundry lights.
Kade tapped her tablet. "Swelling within expected range for Day One. Posture acceptable. Demerit still active - do not add to it." She lowered her voice just enough that the washers almost covered it. "Solenne wants your phrase rehearsed every hour on the hour. Collar will chime. You will answer out loud even if you are alone with the floor. Fail to answer and I mark silence as refusal. Refusal is worse than mouth."
"Yes, Ma'am."
"Folding table. Now."
He crawled. Not because she ordered crawling - because rising without permission was forbidden, and the yellow strip painted along the baseboards made the path obvious. The cage scraped once. He flinched. Kept going.
The low folding table put the work at chest height for a kneeling boy. Officer uniforms. Crisp black. Brass buttons. He folded the way the wall diagram showed: sleeves, crease, stack. Eyes on fabric. The heat in his ass had settled into a deep, bruised throb that flared whenever his heels brushed sit-spot. He welcomed the distraction of corners and seams until the collar chimed soft and sharp at 10:00.
Hourly rehearsal.
Callum's mouth went dry. He said it to the stack of folded trousers.
"I obey female authority."
The collar pulsed once - green acknowledgement. Somewhere in the glass office, Kade did not look up. That somehow made it worse: the system listening even when the woman didn't bother.
He folded. Scrubbed again when Kade rotated him back to the south bay. The tile came clean under his hands in widening circles while Day Seven sat in the back of his skull like a second collar.
Wood. Audience. Count.
Forty strokes was the sentence from intake. One demerit already meant the brief would grow. Three demerits before Day Seven added ten. He did the math while soap foam died on his wrists. One down. Two left before the paddle got hungrier.
He would not speak. He would not be late. He would not -
The collar chimed at 11:00.
"I obey female authority."
Cleaner that time. Almost steady. Almost.
Mid-shift posture check came with company.
At 11:40 the laundry doors opened and Commander Rhea Solenne walked in as if steam and starch belonged to her personally. Auburn hair pinned. Black uniform immaculate despite the humidity. Tablet under one arm. She did not look at Callum first. She looked at Kade's glass office, exchanged two quiet sentences through the open door, then turned.
Callum was on his knees at the folding table, hands mid-crease on a dress shirt. He froze. Eyes down hard enough to ache.
"Hayes," Solenne said. Mild as weather again. "Show me your work."
He held up the half-folded shirt with damp fingers. She took it, inspected the crease, set it aside.
"Acceptable. Stand on your knees. Hands behind your head. Look at me."
He did. The cage lifted with the posture change, shameless under the shirt's short hem. Solenne's gaze flicked there once - data, not romance - then to his face.
"One demerit," she said. "Mouth. Already noted. Kade reports no new unauthorized verbals. That is the only reason you are not doubling warm-up tonight." A pause. "Day Seven rehearsal begins this afternoon for your cohort. Observation gallery. You will kneel in the back row and watch another F-category take a practice set on the judicial bench. Wood. Six strokes. You will count silently with him. You will not look away. If you flinch with your eyes closed, Kade adds demerit weight for avoidance."
Callum's stomach dropped so hard he felt it in the cage. "Yes, Ma'am."
"Phrase."
"I obey female authority."
"Again."
"I obey female authority."
Solenne tipped his chin with two fingers the way she had after the warm-up - claiming the angle of his face like a piece of equipment. "Your ass is still marked. Good. Marks teach faster than lectures. Eat lunch standing. Report to Observation Gallery B at fourteen-hundred. Do not be late, Hayes. You already know what late costs, and Okonkwo still enjoys clinical notes on swelling."
"Yes, Ma'am."
She released his chin. To Kade, without raising her voice: "He's yours until thirteen-fifty. Keep him kneeling. If the phrase cracks again, make him repeat it until it doesn't."
"Understood, Commander."
Solenne left. The doors hissed. Steam filled the space she vacated like the room was trying to forget she'd been sharper than the air.
Kade's heels returned to Callum's mat.
"You heard her," the supervisor said. "South bay until thirteen-hundred. Then rinse, pad return, phrase on the hour. Gallery at fourteen. Eyes down."
"Yes, Ma'am."
He crawled back to the bucket. Scrubbed until his shoulders burned and the tile shone and the cage's soft tick against porcelain became a metronome he stopped flinching at. At 12:00 the collar chimed and he answered the empty bay without waiting for an audience.
"I obey female authority."
No crack. Almost proud of that. Then ashamed of the pride. Then too tired to sort either feeling from the detergent sting in his knuckles.
Lunch was standing again - tray ledge, eyes down, shirt hem brushing heat that had gone from sharp to deep. Boys at the tables didn't whisper warm-up this time. They whispered gallery. Callum heard enough to understand: practice sets were not secret. Someone named Patel from Block A was taking six today. Wood. Audience of F-category males who needed to learn what counting sounded like when the paddle was real.
Callum's hands shook around the protein cup. He set it down carefully so the collar wouldn't log a spill as negligence.
At 13:48 he was already on the yellow line outside Observation Gallery B, kneeling on the corridor mat, hands behind his head, early enough that the wall clock could not betray him. The cage hung heavy. The shirt clung. His ass still remembered Solenne's palm in twelve bright echoes.
The gallery doors would open at fourteen.
Somewhere beyond them waited a bench, a paddle, and a boy who would count out loud while Callum counted in silence - rehearsal for a Day Seven that no longer felt like a rumor on a tablet.
He rehearsed the phrase one more time, soft, for himself.
I obey female authority.
This time it didn't catch.
That scared him more than the crack ever had.
