Breakfast still meant standing.

Callum Hayes stood at the Detention Centre 7 line with the protein cup cold in his hands and Solenne's pale palm echoes still murmuring under the grey F-category shirt. Lighter than wood. Present enough. The chastity cage - size three, locked - clicked once when he shifted his weight. Demerit weight: one. Mouth. Held through Annex stress, held through yesterday's overflow folding at the high table, held through evening meal standing and the lights-out posture check that had ended with a green collar tap and a soft order to sleep on his stomach.

He had slept. Badly. Gallery B wood still lived in his bones like a second heartbeat.

I obey female authority.

Clean under his breath. Steady. He meant to keep it that way.

06:52.

Block C boards sat under a strip of institutional light that made every posted name look like a sentence already finished. Callum arrived early on the yellow line, dropped to his knees on the reading mat the way Solenne had ordered - eyes up only for the board, hands behind his head, cage on display for any officer who wanted inventory - and waited for the screen to finish its overnight refresh.

Other F-category males knelt along the wall. No one spoke. Discussing length with other F-cats had been named stupidity, and stupidity climbed demerits faster than steam burns.

The board chimed. Lines filled.

FORMAL SET - F-CATEGORY

HAYES, C. - DAY SEVEN

GALLERY B - 14:00

ASSIGNED LENGTH: SIX (DEMERIT: 1 - MOUTH)

PRE-SET POSTURE BRIEFING: DRILL OFFICER VOSS - 20:30 - BRIEFING ROOM 3

DO NOT DISCUSS LENGTH. READ KNEELING. CONFIRM ON COLLAR.

Fourteen hundred hours. Tomorrow. Six. Not twelve.

The countdown stopped being a rumor in his ribs and became a clock time he could almost taste.

His collar pulsed amber. Confirm. He answered soft enough for the mat sensors and loud enough for the cameras.

"Confirmed. Hayes. Day Seven. Fourteen hundred. Gallery B. Six."

Green. Logged. A duty officer walked the line once, tablet idle at her hip, and did not ask anyone for conversation. Callum kept his eyes on his own line until the board dimmed to standby. Fourteen hundred. Twenty-thirty tonight for Voss. Do not invent stupidity between now and wood.

He crawled off the mat when dismissed. The cage ticked once on corridor tile. He did not invent a verbal about it.

Supervisor M. Kade opened laundry at 07:58 as if the steam belonged to her personally.

"Hayes. Board confirmed?"

"Yes, Ma'am. Fourteen hundred tomorrow. Gallery B. Six. Briefing twenty-thirty with Drill Officer Voss."

"Good. You can still ruin six before you earn it. Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Acceptable. Overflow day. High table standing permitted - partial height only. You earned it yesterday. Do not confuse partial with free. Knees for scrub bay until nine. Then fold standing. Eyes on creases, not on clocks. Okonkwo still has swelling-note room if you invent late."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Pads. Bucket. South bay."

He scrubbed. Steam plastered the shirt to his back. Every forward rock made the cage kiss cold tile - soft tick, no flinch, worse burn in the ears for the missing flinch. At 09:00 the collar chimed.

"I obey female authority."

Green. Kade did not look up. The system listening without her eyes still felt like a second woman in the room.

At 09:12 she snapped once. "High table. Stand. Hem stays down unless I say lift. Fold officer linens. Brass buttons face left on the stack diagram. If your knees buckle into arrogance - unauthorized sit - I log it."

Standing at the high table felt like a theft he had been allowed to keep. Height. Partial. Earned. His thighs trembled from scrub hours, but his spine remembered deference even vertical: chin soft, eyes on fabric, cage hanging under the hem like a ridiculous locked apology. Crisp black. Brass. Wall diagram - sleeves, crease, stack. Gallery B wood replayed without permission behind his eyes: Patel counting, six rectangles, Solenne's weather-mild math.

Tomorrow at fourteen hundred that sound would stop being someone else's calibration.

The collar chimed at 10:00.

"I obey female authority."

Cleaner. Almost proud. Then ashamed of the pride. Then too busy with corners to sort either feeling from detergent sting.

At 11:40 Kade's heels stopped beside the high stack.

"Shirt hem - lift."

He lifted. Size three. Locked. Flushed from standing work and from the particular arousal of being measured in public fluorescent honesty. Solenne's palm marks lighter than wood but present under the hem. Kade tapped her tablet.

"Swelling within range. Posture acceptable for partial height. Demerit still one. Do not add mouth failure before Voss - she drills posture, not chatter, and she hates boys who arrive late enough to need Okonkwo's notes as an excuse. Lunch standing. Afternoon corridor mats for phrase rehearsal on the hour. Report Briefing Room 3 at twenty-twenty. Early is the only acceptable almost. Confirm."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Dismissed to meal line when the clock says so. Crawl until yellow clears. Standing height ends at my door."

He crawled. Partial height had felt like kindness. Kindness in Detention Centre 7 always came with a clock attached.

Evening meal meant standing again. Protein. Water. No conversation. Callum ate with the cage soft against his thigh and 14:00 scratched behind his eyes like chalk. Lights in the dining block hummed. Somewhere an F-cat two mats over shifted as if he wanted to ask about lengths; Callum kept his mouth shut and his eyes on his cup. Solenne's rule held: no discussing length. He would not invent that stupidity for anyone.

Corridor mats after. Phrase on the hour. Hands behind his head. Early for everything.

19:00. "I obey female authority." 20:00. "I obey female authority."

At 20:18 he crawled the yellow line to Briefing Room 3 and knelt on the entry mat with twelve minutes to spare, cage on display, shirt riding up under cooler air that smelled less like detergent and more like floor polish and leather oil.

At 20:30 exactly the door opened.

Drill Officer Voss was taller than Kade and harder in the shoulders than Solenne's weather-mild stillness. Dark uniform. Hair cropped. No tablet theater - just a clipboard and eyes that inventoried posture the way a carpenter inventoried grain. She looked at Callum once and the look felt like being weighed for wood already.

"Hayes. Crawl in. Center marks. Kneeling deference. Eyes down until I say look."

He crawled. Briefing Room 3 was narrow: taped floor marks for three body positions, a wall mirror that refused kindness, a wooden demonstration paddle hung high enough that it was furniture until it was not. No one-way glass. Somehow that made it sharper. This was not observation theater. This was the evening before.

"Look."

He looked.

"Pre-set posture briefing," Voss said. Flat. Practical. "Tomorrow you are Gallery B at fourteen hundred for a formal six. Demerit one, mouth, held - that is why it is six and not twelve. You will not discuss that math with anyone. You will arrive early. You will present for count. You will take wood in the posture I show you tonight. Fail posture and the set pauses for correction, and pauses are how kindness evaporates. Confirm you understand."

Callum's mouth went dry. "Yes, Ma'am. I understand."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Good enough to start. Up. Position One - presentation stand on the taped marks. Feet. Hands. Chin. Cage visible. Do it."

He stood on the marks. Feet apart to the tape. Hands behind his head. Chin soft. The cage hung shameless under fluorescent honesty, pink at the tip, ridiculous, locked. Voss circled once. Touched his elbow into a sharper angle with two fingers. Tapped the inside of his ankle until it found the line.

"Again from knees. Crawl to marks. Rise. Present. Faster. No wobble."

He did it. Twice. Three times. Shoulders burning. Cage twitching traitorously when her heel stopped close enough that female authority became a smell of polish and soap.

"Position Two - brace for wood." She pointed at the low rail bolted to the far wall. "Hips to tape. Spine long. Head down on count only when ordered. Hands stay where I put them. You do not reach back. Reaching is interference. Interference adds strokes or adds Okonkwo. Prefer neither. Demonstrate."

He braced. The rail was cool. The posture opened him in a way that made Gallery B's crack feel immediate, installed, almost kind for being concrete. Voss adjusted his hip angle with a flat palm - firm, claiming, not gentle except in the way calibrated tools were gentle - and held him there until his thighs shook.

"Hold. Breathe. Do not invent noise." A pause. "Count Patel's set the way you will count yours. Aloud."

Callum's stomach dropped. "One, Ma'am. Two, Ma'am. Three, Ma'am. Four, Ma'am. Five, Ma'am. Six, Ma'am. Thank you, Ma'am."

"Acceptable. Tomorrow you will mean it." She released his hip. "Position Three - recover kneel. Aftercare is not soft talk here. Aftercare is posture until dismissed, phrase on command, swelling check if ordered. Down."

He knelt. Hands behind his head. Eyes down until she tipped the silence.

"Look at me."

He looked. Voss's gaze flicked to the cage, then to the lighter palm marks under his hem, then back to his face - data, not romance.

"Demerit remains one unless you invent stupidity between lights-out and fourteen hundred. Late to Gallery B is stupidity. Discussing six with other F-cats is stupidity. Cracking the phrase under stress is stupidity. Solenne already paid you the kindness of six. I am here to make sure your body can receive it without wasting the gift. Confirm."

Heat climbed his neck - gratitude again, humiliating, worse than fear. "Yes, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

No crack. She made a small mark on the clipboard.

"Lights-out posture check as normal. Sleep on your stomach if the marks complain - they will complain more tomorrow. Report Gallery B corridor mat at thirteen-forty. Early. Collar confirm on arrival. Do not make me send Okonkwo a swelling note because you mistook adrenaline for permission to be late. Questions that are not attempts to negotiate length - one only."

Callum swallowed. "Ma'am - Position Two hip angle. Was it correct on the last hold?"

"Correct enough to start. Tomorrow I will correct what the wood reveals." Almost the ghost of approval. Almost worse than none. "Dismissed to corridor when I release you. Crawl. Unauthorized standing between here and Block C is arrogance. Arrogance climbs demerits. You are holding one. Hold it."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Released."

He crawled. The cage ticked once on briefing tile. In the corridor the air was cooler. 14:00 sat in his mouth like a second phrase. Six. Wood. Gallery B. Drill Officer Voss's hip tape still ghosted on his skin. Solenne's palm marks lighter than what was coming. Patel's count rehearsed until it felt like his own throat already.

Block C lights-out found him on his stomach when the duty officer tapped the collar - green, acceptable - and told him to keep the phrase ready for morning chimes.

He rehearsed once more into the thin pillow, soft, for the cameras that never blinked and for the clock that had finally become a number.

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Steady.

Held.

Tomorrow at fourteen hundred the countdown stopped being a countdown.
