Morning found Callum Hayes on his stomach again - ordered, not chosen - with cage size three locked cold against the sheet and six rectangles of heat under the grey F-category hem still arguing like unfinished inventory.

Day Nine. Demerit still one (mouth). Walk still noticeable. Restricted height still the board's truth.

Collar amber. Confirm.

He answered without rolling onto his back. Back was still unauthorized comfort. Unauthorized comfort was still arrogance. Arrogance still climbed.

"Hayes. Day Nine. Sleep posture held overnight. Demerit one, mouth."

Green. Logged. The duty officer's boots paused at the end of his mat long enough for a glance that weighed swelling the way Solenne had weighed it yesterday - clinical, not kind. She did not ask how the six felt about another morning of being readable. Feelings were not data she collected at chimes.

"Up to kneel. Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Steady. Consonants held the way Solenne had demanded slower yesterday. The duty officer tapped the collar once and moved on. Other F-cats rose with the soft sounds of boys who had not taken length and still got to pretend mornings were ordinary. Callum pushed to Position Three recover-kneel first - hands behind his head, hem down, cage on display - and felt the six light up when his thighs closed. Standing would come when ordered. Height would come only if someone bargained it back into existence. Bargains were not gifts. Bargains had prices.

He knew that before breakfast. Knowing did not make the first vertical step quieter.

Breakfast was standing. Protein cup cold against his palms. Standing made the six argue deeper than Day Eight - not sharp like fresh wood, not even the bruise-walk of yesterday, something settled and loud that other boys could read without being told. An F-cat at the next line watched Callum's gait and then studied his own cup hard enough to invent a crease. No words. The silence was still notice. Callum felt heat climb his neck for being readable and kept the phrase under his tongue like a second lock.

I obey female authority.

He meant to keep it clean. Day Nine felt like a day that would try to make it soft.

The Block C board had changed overnight the way boards always changed - without asking who was ready.

HAYES, C. - DAY NINE
POST-SET: STOMACH SLEEP HELD (2 NIGHTS)
LAUNDRY: RESTRICTED HEIGHT (NO HIGH TABLE)
NOTE: KADE MAY OFFER HEIGHT BARGAIN - ACCEPT ONLY IF DEMERIT HOLDS
INSPECTION: SOLENNE - ANNEX SLOT 11:00 (MOUTH DRILL)
DEMERIT: 1 - MOUTH
WALK: UNDER OBSERVATION. DO NOT DISCUSS LENGTH.

Other boys glanced once. Looked away. Discussing completed sets was still named worse than discussing length. Callum kept his eyes on his own cup and let cold plastic tell him the truth: Day Seven was finished wood. Day Eight was stomach orders and clinical map. Day Nine was a bargain wearing a schedule and a mouth drill wearing Solenne's mild weather.

He finished the protein. He did not rush. Rushing looked like fear inventing a verbal with feet.

Laundry under Supervisor M. Kade opened at 07:50 with the south bay already steaming and the high table conspicuously not his problem - until she made it a problem with a sentence.

"Hayes." Kade did not look soft. She never looked soft on mornings after Gallery B had finished counting. "Board still true?"

"Yes, Ma'am. Restricted height. Annex eleven hundred. Demerit one, mouth."

"Good. You can still ruin a held demerit with corridor arrogance before Solenne sees you." She pointed at the scrub pads, then - deliberately - at the high table where other F-cats were already sorting at standing height. "I have a bargain. Not a kindness. Kindness evaporated on schedule. Listen carefully."

Callum stayed on his knees. Listening carefully was still cheaper than inventing hope.

"You scrub until eight-thirty on knees. Clean work. No limp for attention. At eight-thirty I will let you take thirty minutes of standing fold at the high table - partial height only - if your demerit is still one when I ask, and if your phrase is clean when I ask. If you invent a verbal, a grimace for pity, or a discussion about length with any boy in this bay, the bargain dies and you crawl the rest of the morning. Okonkwo still has swelling-note room if you invent late to Solenne. Confirm you heard the price."

"Yes, Ma'am. Knees until eight-thirty. Height only if demerit holds and phrase is clean. No discussion. No pity face."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Acceptable. Crawl when released to scrub. Unauthorized standing before eight-thirty is still arrogance. You know the ladder."

"Yes, Ma'am."

He scrubbed. Steam plastered the shirt to his back. Every forward rock made the cage kiss tile - soft tick - and the six under his hem answered with a deeper heat that was not steam. He did not flinch for the tick. Missing the flinch still burned his ears. At 08:10 a younger F-cat in the next bay glanced at Callum's careful knees and opened his mouth - then shut it when Kade's shadow crossed the wet floor. Discussion died unborn. Callum kept his eyes on soap lines and let gratitude for silence feel as humiliating as notice.

At 08:30 the collar chimed and Kade walked the fold bay like a verdict with boots.

"Hayes. Demerit."

"One. Mouth. Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Steady. She watched his mouth the way Solenne watched mouths - for soft edges, for invented apology, for the filthy wish to be praised. Then she pointed at the high table.

"Thirty minutes. Standing fold. Partial height. Eyes on linen. If any boy asks about Gallery B, you invent nothing. Silence is still survival. Timer starts now."

He stood. Height arrived like a privilege that knew it was temporary. The six argued louder in vertical - not sharp, deep, readable - and for a filthy second he almost invented a grimace of relief. He swallowed it. Relief worn on a face was pity-begging. Pity was not a category. He folded. Corners. Counts. Stack diagrams that did not care about bargains. Other F-cats glanced at his standing posture and looked away fast. Notice without discussion. He held the phrase under his tongue and did not spend it early.

At 09:00 Kade's timer ended without ceremony.

"Back to knees. Bargain complete. You did not invent a verbal. Do not invent pride about that either. Pride climbs as stupid as pity. Crawl when released to annex prep. Early is still the difference between held and climbed. Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Go."

He crawled. Corridor polish smell. Cage metronome. The six made every knee-fall a small count he was not allowed to speak aloud. Block C fell behind. The unmarked annex door arrived the way unmarked doors always arrived - too soon and not soon enough. His thighs went hot under grey cloth. Observation glass hummed somewhere ahead like a held breath. Mouth drill. Eleven hundred. Solenne.

10:52.

Callum settled on the annex mat early - hands behind his head, chin soft, hem down, cage displayed for inventory - and waited. The voice-log panel glowed amber. No paddle on a stand. Somehow the absence still sharpened the room. Somewhere behind the glass a tablet might have been open on his Day Eight clip - stomach held, swelling within map, phrase slower and clean, demerit held. He did not invent looking for lenses. Looking for lenses was curiosity. Curiosity climbed.

The door opened at 10:59.

Solenne walked in weather-mild, palms empty, as if empty hands were still the sharper threat. She did not greet him. Data first. Always data first.

"Up to kneel taller. Chin tip. Eyes on me."

He rose within the kneel the way annex taught - height without standing permission, throat offered without inventing a speech. She watched his mouth first. Always the mouth. Demerit one lived there like a jewel he was too scared to drop.

"Day Nine. Kade logged a height bargain. Confirmed held. Good." Mild was not soft. "Now we see whether standing fold softened your consonants. Phrase. Slow. Then again. Then once more with the collar amber until I say stop."

"I obey female authority."

Slow. Steady. She did not green him yet. Collar stayed amber like a held breath.

"Again."

"I obey female authority."

Consonants held. Humiliation rose hot behind his ears - not from pain. From wanting the green. From wanting to stay countable while she made the phrase a drill instead of a courtesy.

"Again. Softer volume. I want clean, not performed."

"I obey female authority."

Softer. Clean. She let the green collar tap answer on the third pass and crouched to his side with two gloved fingers against the heat under his hem - clinical, humiliating in its lack of romance, inventory the way Voss had been inventory after six. No soft-talk. Aftercare here was posture until dismissed and the privilege of not earning Okonkwo's note.

"Swelling within expected Day-Nine map. Walk still noticeable. Expected." Her voice stayed mild. "Do not discuss the bargain with other F-cats. Discussion turns a held demerit into a story. Stories climb. Confirm."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Okonkwo does not need a note from this check. She will need one if you invent standing between here and Block C, or if you invent a soft phrase at evening chimes because you are tired of being countable. Tired is not a category that erases demerits." A pause - not kindness. Attention. "Phrase once more. Normal pace."

"I obey female authority."

Normal. Steady. She made a mark on the tablet without letting him see whether it was praise or merely data. Praise was not promised. Data was. Humiliation rose hotter anyway - from the gloved touch, from the three slow passes, from the filthy fact that he wanted the mark to mean he was still worth inventory.

"Recover kneel. Hands. Eyes down until dismissed."

He knelt. The cage pressed his heel. The six pulsed in time with his pulse. Solenne stood, weather still mild, and the annex air felt sharper for her not raising her voice.

"Released to crawl. Hold your one. Day Nine is not a holiday because Kade sold you thirty minutes of height. Holidays are for boys who invent them. You invent nothing."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Go."

Block C took him back slower than morning and louder than he wanted to be.

The notice walk was not a performance. It was physics - heat under cloth, cage locked, thighs arguing with corridor length - and other F-cats made room without making eye contact. One boy at the water station swallowed a question and turned it into a drink. Callum did not thank him. Thanks for silence could become a verbal about the bargain. He crawled to his mat, settled into recover-kneel until the board found him afternoon work, and let the Centre's ordinary cruelty resume:

SERVICE: LINEN SORT - SOUTH STACK - KNEELING ONLY
SUPERVISOR: KADE ROTATION
NOTE: NO HEIGHT. BARGAIN ALREADY SPENT. NO DISCUSSION.

He sorted. Corners. Counts. Stack diagrams that did not care about thirty minutes of standing fold. The work was ordinary until his body reminded him ordinary was a privilege earned by not climbing. When his hem pulled wrong across the six he breathed through it without inventing a sound. When Kade passed once and said only, "Creases. Eyes down. Phrase when the collar asks," he obeyed both the spoken and the unspoken. The collar asked twice before evening. He answered twice. Green twice. Demerit held like a thin wire he could feel in his teeth.

At one point an F-cat across the south stack whispered, barely, "Did she-" and stopped when Callum's eyes stayed on linen. The whisper died. Callum's neck burned for the almost-question and for the filthy gratitude that silence still counted as survival. He folded the next sheet with hands that wanted to shake and were not allowed to.

Mid-afternoon the collar chimed irregular - annex echo, Solenne's calendar still living in the hardware - and he answered on his knees between stacks without inventing annoyance.

"Hayes. Confirm demerit."

"One. Mouth. Ma'am."

"Confirm posture schedule tonight."

"Stomach sleep. As ordered."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Green. The irregular check ended. Nobody around him asked what the collar had wanted. Asking was discussion wearing concern. He returned to corners and counts and the slow heat that made every memory of high-table height feel like a rumor he was not allowed to miss.

Evening chimes arrived like they always did - indifferent to how loud six still felt, indifferent to bargains already spent.

Callum knelt for them. Protein cup empty. Board still true. Solenne's mouth drill still warm behind his teeth where romance had never been invited. Kade's thirty minutes of standing fold still lived in his thighs like a privilege that knew it had been temporary. The duty officer's boots stopped at his mat. Tablet light on his face. Inventory hour.

"Hayes. Day Nine close. Sleep posture."

"Stomach, Ma'am. As ordered."

"Demerit."

"One. Mouth."

"Walk."

He almost invented a verbal - an explanation, a soft apology for being readable, a thank-you for height that would have climbed faster than pride - and swallowed it. "Noticeable, Ma'am. Held without discussion."

A pause. Then a mark. Not praise. Data.

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Green. Lights-out order without commentary. He went down onto the mattress the way he had been taught to receive wood - careful, complete, no reaching for comfort that had not been issued. The cage kissed cold sheet. The six talked in slow pulses. Somewhere in Block C another boy pretended not to notice the sound of Hayes settling like a completed set still learning how to be horizontal on command after a morning that had sold him height and a noon that had sold him consonants.

Callum rehearsed once into the pillow, soft, for the cameras and for the demerit he was still holding and for the filthy fact that staying countable through a bargain and a mouth drill felt like a different kind of thank-you - quieter than Gallery B's six, somehow hotter.

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Steady.

Held.

Day Nine was not a countdown.

It was a height bargain with a price, a mouth drill with three slow passes, a noticeable walk that still refused discussion, and the knowledge - lodged hotter than swelling - that he wanted to stay countable.
