At 13:59 the corridor clock above Observation Gallery B clicked over with a soft mechanical tick that Callum Hayes felt in his teeth.

He was already kneeling on the yellow-line mat, hands behind his head, eyes down, thin grey F-category shirt riding high enough that the chastity cage - size three, locked, still faintly flushed from laundry friction - hung in plain fluorescent view. The MCA collar's LED strip glowed zone green against his throat. Posture amber. Voice log idle. Demerit weight: one. Mouth. Unchanged since Orientation Hall, and he meant to keep it that way.

His sit-spots still remembered Commander Rhea Solenne's private warm-up from the night before - twelve bright palm echoes that had gone from sharp to deep heat through a full morning of knees on Block C tile. Supervisor M. Kade had released him at thirteen-fifty with a final phrase check and a look that said do not make me write Okonkwo a swelling note.

He was not late.

That was the only mercy he allowed himself.

The gallery doors hissed open at 14:00 exactly.

"F-category observers," a woman called from inside - not Solenne, not Kade. Younger voice. Clipboard snap. "File in. Back row mats. Knees. Hands behind heads. Eyes forward when seated. Unauthorized verbals will be logged as avoidance. Confirm as you enter."

Boys filed past Callum in a soft shuffle of bare feet and cage clicks. He rose only enough to crawl through the threshold on hands and knees, the way the yellow arrows demanded, then found an empty mat in the last row of the tiered gallery.

Observation Gallery B was a half-bowl of dark benches above a bright white floor. Below: a judicial bench bolted to the tile, leather straps hanging loose, a wood paddle resting on a side stand like a tool waiting for its shift. Cameras in every corner. A glass booth raised to the right where two officers sat with tablets. The air smelled of polish, disinfectant, and the faint sweet-iron tang of nervous sweat.

Callum knelt. Hands behind his head. Cage on display. Ass still marked under the shirt hem. He kept his eyes open because Solenne had said closed eyes counted as flinching, and flinching added demerit weight.

At 14:04 Commander Rhea Solenne entered from the side door as if the room had been holding its breath for her.

Auburn hair pinned. Black uniform immaculate. Tablet under one arm. She did not look at the gallery first. She looked at the bench, at the paddle, at the glass booth. Then she turned and scanned the kneeling row the way she scanned inventory.

Her gaze found Callum for half a second - data, not comfort - and moved on.

"Observers," Solenne said, mild as weather. "You are here to learn counting, posture under stress, and what a practice set sounds like when the implement is wood. Day Seven for your cohort is not a rumor. It is a scheduled event. Today you watch. You count silently. You do not look away. Confirm."

A ragged chorus of Yes, Ma'am rose from the mats. Callum's voice joined them, steady enough.

"Phrase," Solenne added, almost casually.

Every F-category boy in the row answered together, some cracked, some clean:

"I obey female authority."

Callum's did not catch. That still scared him more than the crack ever had.

The subject entered at 14:08.

Patel - Block A, F-category, older than Callum by a year or two if the jawline meant anything - walked in on bare feet with his shirt already hemmed for display. Cage size four, Callum noticed with a stupid flicker of comparison he hated himself for. Patel's collar glowed the same soft green. His face was carefully blank.

A second officer - tall, dark braid, nameplate reading Drill Officer Voss - guided him to the bench without touching him more than necessary.

"Practice set," Voss said, loud enough for the gallery. "Wood. Six strokes. Subject counts aloud after each. Observers count silently. Subject will remain in position until dismissed. Any break in count without permission resets the set. Confirm, Patel."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Voss nodded once. "Over the bench. Hands on the far rail. Feet wide. Shirt up. Eyes open."

Patel folded himself over the leather with a discipline that made Callum's stomach drop. The cage hung between the bench edge and his thighs, ridiculous and locked and somehow more honest than anyone's face. Voss lifted the wood paddle from the stand. It was longer than Solenne's palm, denser, the grain dark and polished from use.

Callum's own marks pulsed in sympathy. He forced his eyes to stay open.

Solenne had moved to the glass booth rail, watching the gallery as much as the bench.

"Begin," she said.

The first stroke landed with a flat, authoritative crack that filled the bowl.

Patel's breath punched out. Then, after a beat that felt too long: "One, Ma'am."

Callum counted one in his head and felt the number settle behind his teeth like something he would have to say out loud someday soon.

Second stroke. Harder. A bright rectangle blooming across Patel's sit-spots.

"Two, Ma'am."

Silent two. Callum's thighs trembled on the mat. The cage under his own shirt gave a traitor twitch that made his ears burn. Around him other boys were breathing too carefully. Someone in the middle row made a tiny sound and cut it off. A tablet in the booth chirped - logged.

Third stroke. Wood on already-warmed skin. Patel's voice stayed level.

"Three, Ma'am."

Silent three. Callum remembered Solenne's fingers tipping his chin in laundry steam. Marks teach faster than lectures. He believed her now in a way breakfast standing had not quite managed.

Fourth. Patel's hips jerked once against the bench and stilled.

"Four, Ma'am."

Silent four. Callum's demerit sat in his collar file like a held breath. Mouth. One. If he looked away, if he closed his eyes, if his collar logged an unauthorized verbal, Kade would add weight before dinner and Okonkwo would enjoy the clinical notes. He kept watching. The paddle rose again.

Fifth. The sound was wetter now - heat and impact and the particular silence of a room that knew better than to comment.

"Five, Ma'am."

Silent five. Callum's own ass throbbed as if the wood had found him by proxy. He swallowed the phrase without being asked, just to feel it hold:

I obey female authority.

Sixth. Final. Clean. The loudest of the set, or maybe only the loudest because everyone was waiting for it.

Patel's voice cracked on the last syllable and recovered.

"Six, Ma'am. Thank you, Ma'am."

Silent six. Callum's count matched. His hands were still locked behind his head. His eyes were still open. Sweat had cooled along his spine under the thin shirt. Somewhere in his chest a new fact had installed itself without permission: Day Seven would sound like this, only longer, and the voice counting would be his.

Voss set the paddle down with the care of someone racking a tool, not a weapon. She checked Patel's color, tapped her tablet, and spoke without drama.

"Practice set complete. Marks within expected range. Subject remains over the bench for three minutes of cool-down display. Observers hold position."

Patel held. Breathing measured. Cage still hanging. Ass striped in six precise wood rectangles that would teach him how to sit for the rest of the day.

Callum stared until his eyes watered and did not blink it away.

At 14:22 Solenne left the booth rail and walked the gallery row.

She stopped behind Callum first.

"Hayes," she said, soft enough that only he and the nearest mats would catch it. "Silent count?"

"Yes, Ma'am. Six."

"Eyes closed at any point?"

"No, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

No crack. She made a small note on her tablet. Approval, or only data. He could not tell.

"Demerit remains one," Solenne said. "Mouth. Laundry report clean. Gallery attendance on time. That buys you a quiet evening unless you invent new stupidity." A pause. Heels shifted. "Look at Patel's marks, Hayes. Not because I enjoy your discomfort. Because your Day Seven set will be twelve on wood if your demerit climbs, and six if it does not. Motivation is a kindness. Confirm you understand."

Callum's mouth went dry. "Yes, Ma'am. I understand."

"Good." Her voice warmed by a fraction that was somehow worse than cold. "Dismissed to corridor mats when Voss releases the row. Evening meal standing. Lights-out posture check by Block C duty officer. Tomorrow you return to laundry knees under Kade until midday, then report to Orientation Annex for verbal drill with me. Do not be late. Okonkwo's schedule still has room for swelling notes if you invent a reason."

"Yes, Ma'am."

She moved down the row, asking the same quiet questions of the next boy, and the next. Callum stayed locked in the deference pose, staring at Patel's cooling stripes, counting them again in silence because his body seemed to need the numbers to stay real.

Six. Wood. Practice.

His own Day Seven was no longer a line on a tablet. It had a sound now. It had a smell of polish and sweat. It had a shape bent over leather with a cage hanging honest underneath.

Voss released the observers at 14:31.

"Crawl out. Corridor mats. Hands behind heads until the yellow line clears. Unauthorized standing will be logged."

Callum crawled. The cage ticked against tile once and he did not flinch. In the corridor the air was cooler. Boys lined the mats in a trembling row of grey shirts and locked steel. Someone whispered six like a prayer and went silent when a camera blinked.

Callum knelt on his assigned square, early for nothing except the habit of not being late, and rehearsed tomorrow's order under his breath because Solenne had planted it cleanly:

Laundry knees until midday. Orientation Annex. Verbal drill. Her voice. Her chin-tip. Her weather-mild corrections.

And underneath all of it, waiting like a scheduled storm: Day Seven, wood, and a count he would have to say out loud while a gallery of boys learned from his marks the way he had just learned from Patel's.

The collar chimed the hour.

15:00.

"I obey female authority," Callum said to the empty stretch of corridor air.

Clean. Steady.

He almost wished it had cracked. Cracks felt like resistance. Clean felt like the Centre was already rewriting him from the inside out - and the terrifying part, the hot part he would never admit on a voice log, was that some traitor pulse in the cage answered every female heel on tile as if obedience itself had become the only arousal he was allowed.

Patel limped past on the way back to Block A, shirt down, face carefully blank, sit-spots teaching every step. For a second their eyes met. Patel gave the smallest nod - not friendship, not warning, just recognition between F-category males who now shared the same sound in their bones.

Then he was gone.

Callum stayed on his knees until the duty officer waved the row clear for evening routes. He rose carefully, cage swinging, marks under his own hem still singing Solenne's palm from the night before - lighter than wood, he knew now, and somehow that knowledge made tomorrow's verbal drill feel like the last soft thing before the Centre stopped rehearsing and started counting him for real.

He followed the yellow line toward Block C with his eyes down and his phrase held ready, already hearing twelve strokes in a future that no longer felt theoretical.
