Breakfast in Detention Centre 7 still meant standing for Callum Hayes.

He stood because the night before had not rewritten the rule, and because Block C lights-out posture check had ended with a duty officer tapping his collar once - green, acceptable - and telling him to sleep on his stomach if the marks complained. They complained. Softly now. Solenne's palm warm-up from two nights back had faded to a pale reminder under the thin grey F-category shirt, lighter than the wood rectangles he had watched bloom across Patel's sit-spots in Gallery B. Lighter, and somehow louder for being quieter.

The chastity cage - size three, locked - hung under the hem and clicked when he reached for the protein cup. Demerit weight: one. Mouth. Held through laundry, held through gallery silence, held through evening meal standing. He meant to keep holding it.

I obey female authority.

He said it under his breath between swallows. Clean. Steady. The crack that had lived in his throat since Orientation Hall had gone quiet, and that still scared him more than the crack ever had.

07:38.

Yellow line to Block C laundry. Early. Cage rattling when he stopped too fast. He knelt on the entry mat with nineteen minutes to spare, hands behind his head, eyes down, shirt riding up under fluorescent steam-light.

Supervisor M. Kade opened the glass office door at 07:59 as if the clock belonged to her personally.

"Hayes. Day Two on my floor. Demerit one, mouth. Gallery attendance logged clean. Phrase on the hour. Knees until midday, then you are Solenne's problem in Orientation Annex. Confirm."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Louder. The washers still eat soft boys."

"Yes, Ma'am."

She circled him once. Gaze on the cage - flushed already from the walk and the stupid traitor pulse that answered female heels - then on the lighter marks under his shirt hem.

"Solenne's warm-up is fading," Kade said, not unkind. "Good. Means you can feel the next lesson when it arrives. South bay first. Scrub. Fold. Do not invent verbals. Okonkwo still has room on the swelling schedule if you invent a reason to see her."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Good enough to start. Pads on. Bucket. Eyes on tile."

The knee pads helped for the first quarter hour. After that they were only proof that his height had been assigned again.

He scrubbed. Steam plastered the grey shirt to his back. Every forward rock made the cage kiss cold tile with a soft tick he no longer flinched at - which somehow made his ears burn worse. At 09:00 the collar chimed and he answered the empty bay out loud.

"I obey female authority."

Green pulse. Acknowledgement. Kade did not look up from her tablet. The system listening without her eyes still felt like a second woman in the room.

Folding table at 09:40. Officer linens. Crisp black. Brass buttons. He worked the wall diagram - sleeves, crease, stack - while Gallery B replayed behind his eyes without permission: wood crack, Patel's voice counting, six precise rectangles, Solenne's weather-mild math about six versus twelve.

Day Seven was no longer a line on a tablet. It had a sound. It sat in his bones like polish and sweat.

The collar chimed at 10:00.

"I obey female authority."

Cleaner. Almost proud. Then ashamed of the pride. Then too busy with corners and seams to sort either feeling from the detergent sting in his knuckles.

At 11:12 Kade's heels stopped beside the low table.

"Up on your knees. Hands behind your head. Shirt hem - lift."

He obeyed. The cage hung shameless under laundry light, pink at the tip, ridiculous, locked. Kade tapped her tablet.

"Swelling within expected range. Posture acceptable. Demerit still one. Do not add to it in Annex - Solenne will not be as patient with mouth failure as I am with soap." A pause. Almost amusement. "Rinse. Pad return. Phrase on release. You leave my floor at eleven-fifty. Annex at twelve. Do not be late, Hayes. Late is how demerits climb."

"Yes, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Dismissed to corridor when the clock says so. Crawl until the yellow line clears."

He crawled. The cage scraped once. He did not invent a verbal about it.

Orientation Annex sat past the administrative wing, past a stretch of corridor that smelled less like detergent and more like dry paper and floor polish. The door was unmarked except for a small brass plate: ANNEX - VERBAL / DEFERENCE. Callum arrived at 11:54, knelt on the corridor mat early enough that the wall clock could not betray him, hands behind his head, cage on display, phrase held ready like a tool he was afraid to drop.

At 12:00 exactly the door hissed open.

Commander Rhea Solenne stood in the threshold as if the Annex had been waiting for her posture to authorize the hour. Auburn hair pinned. Black uniform immaculate. Tablet under one arm. She looked at Callum the way she looked at inventory - data first, then use.

"Hayes. Crawl in. Center mat. Deference pose. Eyes on me when I say so."

He crawled. The Annex was smaller than Orientation Hall, smaller than Gallery B: white walls, one-way glass along the left, a single chair for the officer, a kneeling mat bolted to the floor with yellow tape that left no argument about placement. Cameras in three corners. A voice-log panel glowing soft amber on the wall. No paddle on a stand. Somehow that made the room sharper. This was not about wood yet. This was about the mouth that had already earned him one demerit.

Callum knelt. Hands behind his head. Cage hanging. Marks under the hem still pale but present. He kept his eyes down until she tipped the silence.

"Look at me."

He looked. Solenne sat. Crossed one knee. Mild as weather.

"Verbal drill," she said. "You will answer phrase on command, on chime, and under interruption. You will not crack. You will not invent fillers. You will not close your eyes when I correct your chin. Demerit remains one - mouth - unless you give me a reason to climb it. Six on wood for Day Seven if you hold. Twelve if you do not. Motivation is still a kindness. Confirm you understand."

Callum's mouth went dry. "Yes, Ma'am. I understand."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Again. Faster."

"I obey female authority."

"Again. Eyes open. Chin up."

He lifted. She rose, crossed the two steps between chair and mat, and tipped his chin with two fingers the way she had in laundry steam - claiming the angle of his face like equipment that needed calibration.

"Again."

"I obey female authority."

No crack. Her fingers stayed. The cage gave a traitor twitch he hated himself for. Solenne's gaze flicked down once - data, not romance - then back to his eyes.

"Good enough to begin stress," she said, and released his chin. "Collar will chime irregularly. Between chimes I will interrupt with posture notes, demerit reminders, and Gallery B recall. You will answer phrase clean every time. Fail once and I add weight before you leave this room. Okonkwo enjoys clinical notes. You already know that. Confirm."

"Yes, Ma'am."

She returned to the chair. Tapped the tablet. The collar chimed almost immediately - sharp, early, unfair.

"I obey female authority."

Green pulse.

"Describe what you heard in Gallery B," Solenne said, mild. "Three sentences. Then phrase."

Callum swallowed. "Wood. Six strokes on Patel. He counted aloud. I counted silent. The paddle sounded flat and final. Day Seven will sound like that for me."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Acceptable summary. Incomplete honesty." She tipped her head. "You are still hearing twelve in your skull. Say so."

Heat climbed his neck. "Yes, Ma'am. I hear twelve."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Good. Honesty under stress is still obedience." The collar chimed again - sooner. He answered before the second tone finished.

"I obey female authority."

Solenne stood. Walked behind him. Heels soft on Annex tile. "Hands higher. Elbows back. Shirt hem - lift it yourself."

His face burned. He lifted. The cage hung in fluorescent honesty, flushed from kneeling and from the particular arousal of being corrected by weather-mild cruelty. Size three. Locked. Ridiculous.

"Still marked," Solenne observed. "Palm echoes. Lighter than wood. You know the difference now because you watched. That is the point of galleries, Hayes - not entertainment. Calibration." A pause. Fingers tipped his chin from behind, angling his face toward the one-way glass. "Someone may be observing. Assume they are. Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Steady. Terrifying.

She released him. Returned to the chair. "Demerit check. Say your weight and category without prompting."

"One. Mouth. F-category. Detention Centre 7. Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

The collar chimed. He answered. She interrupted mid-syllable with a soft stop, then: "Restart. Full phrase. No fragments."

His pulse jumped. Mouth failure lived one bad restart away. He breathed once, the way he had learned not to invent fillers.

"I obey female authority."

Solenne made a small note. Approval, or only data. He still could not tell.

"Again. On your knees as you are. Faster. Then hold silence until I ask."

"I obey female authority."

Silence. The Annex hummed. Somewhere behind the glass a tablet might have chirped. Callum held the deference pose until his shoulders trembled and the cage's soft weight felt like a second sentence hanging under the shirt.

"Count Patel's set for me," Solenne said quietly. "Aloud. The way you will count your own."

Callum's stomach dropped. "One, Ma'am. Two, Ma'am. Three, Ma'am. Four, Ma'am. Five, Ma'am. Six, Ma'am."

"Thank you, Ma'am - finish it the way he did."

"Six, Ma'am. Thank you, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

"Now count what twelve would feel like," she said, still mild, "without raising your voice. In your head. Then tell me when you finish."

He counted. Silent. Each number arrived with the Gallery B crack still installed in his ribs. By eight his eyes wanted to close. He kept them open because flinching with closed eyes had been named avoidance, and avoidance added weight. By twelve his mouth was dry and the cage had twitched twice traitorously against nothing.

"Finished, Ma'am."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

Solenne set the tablet aside. Stood. Crossed to him again. Chin-tip - firm, claiming, almost gentle in the way a calibrated tool was gentle.

"Demerit remains one," she said. "Mouth. Held through stress drill. That buys you six on wood for Day Seven unless you invent new stupidity between now and the formal set. Formal scheduling posts tomorrow morning on Block C boards. You will read it kneeling. You will not discuss length with other F-category males. You will report to Drill Officer Voss for pre-set posture briefing the evening before. Confirm."

Callum's throat worked. Six. Not twelve. Held. The relief was hot and humiliating and somehow worse than fear because it felt like gratitude.

"Yes, Ma'am. I understand."

"Phrase."

"I obey female authority."

No crack. She held his chin a beat longer, studying the clean delivery the way she studied crease work on a folded shirt.

"Good." Weather-mild again. Almost warm, which was somehow worse than cold. "Dismissed to corridor mats when I release you. Afternoon chores under Kade's overflow list - folding only, standing permitted at the high table because your knees have earned a partial height. Evening meal standing. Lights-out posture check. Tomorrow: board reading for Day-Seven formal set time, then laundry until your briefing window. Do not be late to anything that has a clock. Okonkwo's schedule still has room."

"Yes, Ma'am."

She released his chin. Stepped back. "Crawl out. Hands behind your head at the yellow line. Unauthorized standing will be logged as arrogance, and arrogance climbs demerits faster than mouth."

"Yes, Ma'am."

Callum crawled. The cage ticked once on Annex tile and he did not invent a sound about it. In the corridor the air was cooler. He found his mat, early for nothing except the habit of not being late, and knelt with the phrase still hot in his mouth.

Six. Wood. Formal set. Posted tomorrow.

Twelve still lived in his bones as a counterfactual - the sound he would have owned if the phrase had cracked under her chin-tip - and some traitor pulse in the cage answered that almost-loss as if obedience itself had become the only arousal Detention Centre 7 allowed him to keep.

He rehearsed once more, soft, for the empty stretch of corridor and for the cameras that never blinked.

"I obey female authority."

Clean. Steady.

Held.
